Whether it's a fire, medical event, gas leak, structural collapse or confined space incident, the first few minutes are critical. That's why Emergency Response Teams (ERTs) are a vital part of Australia's workplace safety system.
Under the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act, employers are required to have adequate emergency procedures in place and ensure that key personnel are trained to respond effectively. ERT training equips personnel with the skills to contain incidents, rescue victims, manage communication and protect other workers until external emergency services arrive.

What is Emergency Response Training (ERT)?+
ERT training prepares designated personnel to respond to workplace emergencies such as fires and explosions, medical incidents, chemical spills and gas leaks, confined space rescues, and structural collapses or entrapments.
Who needs ERT training?+
On-site emergency response teams, safety officers and WHS coordinators, mining and construction workers, remote or isolated work crews, large industrial or processing sites, and confined space entry teams.
Is ERT training mandatory in Australia?+
While there is no single mandated ERT course, WHS legislation requires that persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) provide effective emergency plans and ensure trained personnel can implement them. This is particularly relevant in mining, oil & gas, and hazardous materials industries.
What does ERT training include?+
Firefighting and first response, casualty handling and first aid, confined space and vertical rescue, emergency evacuation and communications, breathing apparatus use, and working in low-visibility or toxic environments.
How long does ERT training take?+
Most core training programs run from 1 to 5 days depending on complexity. Refresher courses may take 1 day.
What qualifications do you receive?+
Nationally recognised units of competency may include PUASAR025 (Undertake confined space rescue), PUASAR022 (Participate in a rescue operation), PUAFIR207 (Operate breathing apparatus) and HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid).
